Wilkinson serves as an Early Childhood Center and operates under the instructional methodology of Project Construct. Project Construct offers students "hands-on, minds-on" experiences to attain deep understandings in the core content areas, while they also learn to work collaboratively with adults and peers and to be lifelong problem solvers.

Additionally, Wilkinson offers enrichment gifted classrooms for those who qualify for Gifted Programs under District guidelines

Students graduating 2nd grade at Wilkinson Early Childhood Center are automatically assigned to Humboldt Academy of Higher Learning for 3rd Grade.

Students determined eligible for SLPS District Gifted Programs who attend SLPS General Education Magnet Schools or SLPS Neighborhood Schools are not given Continuity Placement Priority into Gifted Program Magnet Schools, including students enrolled in Gifted Enrichment programs at Wilkinson. Parents of students currently enrolled in a Magnet or Choice School wishing for their child to attend one of the Gifted Education Program Magnet Schools must apply to other schools desired and be considered in the lottery with the priority assigned as a student currently enrolled in a Magnet or Choice School.
