Wheeler Classical Junior Academy (CJA) is one of three full-time, tuition free, Gifted and Talented schools in the St. Louis region offered by the St. Louis Public Schools. High expectations are set for students who have tested and been recognized as gifted students. CJA’s goal is to improve student achievement by providing challenges that promote intellectual, social, emotional, and creative excellence. The school offers a challenging child-centered, intellectual curriculum.
Wheeler CJA has also been recognized by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) as a Gold Star School and by the U.S. Department of Education as a Blue Ribbon School for continuously demonstrating outstanding achievement in academics and other benchmarks of successful schools, such as exemplar parent and community engagement, consistent student attendance, highly qualified instructional and support staff, plus a safe & efficient school environment.
In 2013, Wheeler CJA received Honorable Mention for a Missouri School of Character and in 2014; Wheeler CJA was recognized by DESE as Accredited with Distinction.
- Students must achieve eligible scores on tests administered by the SLPS Gifted Testing Offices. Scores submitted for test results administered by private testing vendors will not be accepted for review. Scores submitted for tests administered by other school districts are subject to review and approval by the SLPS Gifted Testing Offices.
- Minimum eligible scores are 90th percentile on intelligence and academic achievement tests.
- Gifted Permission to Assess online submission form must be returned 1 week after submitting this application.
The Gifted Testing Offices have final determination on student eligibility for gifted programs offered by the SLPS.
Students graduating 5th grade out of Wheeler CJA are automatically assigned to McKinley CJA Middle for 6th grade.
